AZUSA, Calif. – North Dakota State junior Paul Olson led the Bison men competing in the decathlon at the Bryan Clay Multis on Thursday.
Olson (Oxbow, N.D.) scored 4,092 points through five events, coming up just short of the first-day pace teammate Zach McGlynn set last year (4,141 points) on his way to the decathlon school record.
Olson opened the day with a time of 10.84 in the 100m, then posted marks of 23-00.75 (7.03m) in the long jump, 41-08.50 (12.71m) in the shot put, and 6-08.25 (2.04m) in the high jump. He capped the day by running 48.53 in the 400m.
Olson's 100m, long jump, and 400m performances were all new personal-bests, contributing to his personal-best Day 1 score.
NDSU freshmen Owen Angell (3,607 points) and Trey Knoke (3,519 points) are both competing in their first collegiate decathlon.
Decathlon competition will conclude on Friday at Azusa Pacific University.
