NDSU Women’s Golf Finishes Strong at Diane Thomason Invitational

PLEASANT VALLEY, Iowa – Three Bison finished inside the top 20 as the North Dakota State women's golf team earned fifth place at the Diane Thomason Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.
The Bison (308-303-300–911) compiled a score of +16 in the final round of the tournament, the third-lowest mark among all teams in the field. It is the third consecutive top five finish to open the season for NDSU, the second time they've accomplished that feat in the past three seasons. They ended 33 strokes back of first-place Iowa (293-295-290–878). Missouri State (290-299-302– 891) and St. Thomas (295-300-299–894) finished in second and third, respectively.
Hannah Dunk (73-74-76–223) ended the tournament in a tie for 11th at +10, just missing her third straight top 10 finish. Dunk grabbed three birdies on the day, finishing with a 38 on both nines. Overall in the tournament, she played the front nine at just two-over, the lowest mark among the Bison.
Avery Bartels (80-72-76–228) closed the event in a tie for 19th at +15 overall. She carded 12 pars and a birdie in the final round, including eight pars on the front nine. Bartels dominated the 12th hole throughout the tournament, a 470-yard par 5. She carded two birdies and an eagle to finish four-under, the third consecutive tournament she has finished a par 5 at three-under or better.
Norah Roberts (77-79-74–230) finished strong in the final round, shooting a 74 and rising to 27th place at +17. She closed the tournament by shooting one-under over her final eight holes. She carded 14 pars on the day, bringing her tournament total to 34 pars. She was one of two golfers in the field to finish under par on the front nine in multiple rounds, joining Iowa's Maura Peters.
Jeri Lafleche (79-78-74–231) joined Roberts in finishing strong with a 74, ending in a tie for 31st at + 18 overall. She opened the round with two birdies and three pars, ending the day with a 38 on the front nine and a 36 on the back nine. She remained consistent throughout the tournament, posting no double bogeys and just one triple bogey. She also had four separate stretches of at least five holes without a bogey, including an eight-hole stretch from holes 5 to 12 in the second round.
Belle Kongshaug (79-80-78–237) ended in a tie for 46th at +24 overall. Kongshaug kicked off the round on hole 10 with five straight pars, then grabbed two birdies on holes 2 and 8 en route to a front-nine 38. She closed her third collegiate tournament with 29 pars and three birdies.
Emma Fitzmorris (79-76-72–227) competed as an individual for the Bison and improved her score in every round, firing a one-under 72 on her way to a tie for 17th at +14 overall. Fitzmorris carded all pars on the front nine in the final round and tacked on two birdies on holes 12 and 17 to post a 36 on both nines. She birdied hole 12 in all three rounds, joining Bartels as one of five golfers to finish the hole at three-under or better for the tournament.

The Bison will take next week off before continuing their fall schedule at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial in Springfield, Missouri. The tournament will be hosted by Missouri State at Twin Oakes Country Club on October 12-13.

Fitzmorris carded all pars on the front nine in the final round and tacked on two birdies on holes 12 and 17 to post a 36 on both nines. She birdied hole 12 in all three rounds, joining Bartels as one of five golfers to finish the hole at three-under or better for the tournament.
