NDSU Goes Into Overtime Again, Drops 2-1 Decision to Creighton

OMAHA, Neb.--Creighton's Katie Heitke scored late in the second overtime to seal a 2-1 victory against North Dakota State at the Bluejay Classic. NDSU (2-4-1) ventured into its fourth overtime contest of the season against the tournament host before falling. The Bison will play South Dakota State on Sunday, September 26 at noon to close out the tournament.

NDSU could not get a shot off in the two overtime periods, while Creighton (4-4-1) took nine. Heitke's game-winner came at the 107:35 minute in the second overtime. Her shot deflected off a Bison defender and beat Bison goalkeeper Katie Stombaugh from 10 yards out.

An overwhelming crowd of 953 watched an evenly matched first period as Creighton outshot NDSU six to five. The lone goal of the first half was scored by Bluejay midfielder Chelsea Mackenzie on a free kick from 45 yards away.

The Bison responded late in the second period when freshman Michelle Martinez found an opening and blasted a shot past Creighton goalkeeper Jamie Herrmann at 82:10. Fellow freshman Chelsea Body set up Martinez's first collegiate goal as a Bison.

Creighton put the pressure on in overtime and capitalized. The Bluejays led the shot totals for the match with a 24-7 margin and led in corner kicks with a 13-1 advantage.

NDSU received shots on goal from Jessica Rodgers, Laura Hermanson, Body, and Martinez. Katie Stombaugh stopped six shots in a losing effort.

"The team really battled in a physical game," said head coach Pete Cuadrado. "They stepped it up and fought back against a good team in front of a big crowd."

The Bison will play South Dakota State on Sunday, September 26. Game time has been slated for noon.
