MANCHESTER, N.H.--North Dakota State University outscored Saint Anselm College 15-2 in the game's final 4-1/2 minutes to post a 77-60 victory in a non-conference women's basketball game played Monday, Jan. 3, at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
North Dakota State improves to 13-0 on the season. The Bison will play at the University of Wisconsin-Stout (8-4) at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8.
Saint Anselm (3-6), members of the Northeast-10 Conference, came out and raised "Cain" with North Dakota State -- literally. Hawks' forward Raenielle Decastro-Cain juked her way to a game-high 28 points including 21 in the first half. She connected on 11-of-19 from the field and 6-of-10 from the foul line. The Bison were able to take a 40-35 halftime lead.
Foul trouble caught with Cain, who sat for nearly half of the second period, but Saint Anselm stayed close and trailed by only four points at 62-58 with under five minutes to play. The Hawks had possession of the basketball with a chance to whittle down the deficit.
However, North Dakota State's Amanda Krenz came up with a steal on the next trip down the floor that lead to a Brandee Gibbs layup to start the Bison late-game run. Lacey Johnson fought for an offensive rebound and converted the conventional three-point play with a bucket and free throw, while Katie Lorenz nailed a jumper on a dazzling move inside to put NDSU ahead 69-60 with 2:10 left.
Lorenz led the Bison with 21 points, while Gibbs followed with 15 points. Johnson finished with nine points and eight rebounds, while Katie Dahlen came off the bench to match her career-high with eight points.
North Dakota State held a commanding 51-29 advantage on the boards and hit 7-of-23 from the 3-point line compared to a 0-for-3 showing for Saint Anselm. The Hawks outshot NDSU 43.1 percent to 42.4 percent and committed 14 turnovers compared to 16 for the Bison.
