NDSU Soccer Forces Southern Utah to its Sixth Tie of the Season

CEDAR CITY, Utah?The North Dakota State women's soccer team played to their first tie of the season in a 1-1 match at Southern Utah on Saturday, Oct. 8.

 

NDSU is now 7-4-1 on the season, while Southern Utah moved to 3-2-6.

 

After a scoreless first period, Southern Utah's Catherine Johnson connected on a shot from the left wing and into the right corner of the net to put the Thunderbirds up 1-0 in the 52nd minute.

 

The Bison countered in the 60th minute when Patty Romeo won a header off of a corner kick and assisted Olivia Cole's scoring shot from inside the box.

 

In the first overtime, Southern Utah put up one shot to NDSU's zero, while the Bison had a 3-1 advantage in the second extra frame, but neither offense could garner the golden goal.  

 

Karli Kopietz had a season-high 13 saves for the Bison while Southern Utah's Holly Davis recorded six in the contest.

 

This was the first overtime match for NDSU since a 2-1 defeat at Northern Colorado on Oct. 17, 2004. The Bison last tied a match on Sept. 3, 2004, with a 3-3 final at Western Illinois.

 

The Bison return to action at home with matches against fellow Division I independent school Northern Colorado on Friday, Oct. 14, and Big Sky Conference member Montana on Sunday, Oct. 16.

 

“It will nice to be home next week,” Cuadrado said. “This will be the first time in two years we will be home for consecutive weekends.”
