TELEVISION GAMES: North Dakota State's 63-49 loss at Minnesota on Monday pushed the Bison to 0-4 in television games since moving to Division I in 2004-05. NDSU was 0-3 on the tube last year with a 70-57 loss at Minnesota, a 69-68 setback at Drake, and a 72-64 loss at IPFW. North Dakota State has two more television games after this Friday's game at Texas Tech. The Bison home game with Kansas State on Dec. 9 will be on FSN Midwest and the game at Iowa State on Dec. 31 will be on ESPN Full Court.
SEASON OPENERS: North Dakota State snapped a three-year losing streak in season openers with the 91-76 win last Friday at Idaho. NDSU has a 67-41 record in its opening games dating back to 1897-98.
EXHIBITION PLAY: North Dakota State defeated Minnesota State-Moorhead 90-56 in its only exhibiton game of the preseason on Nov. 4. Mike Nelson scored 17 first-half points and Ben Woodside poured in a game-high 21 points as the Bison shot 51 percent from the field. Redshirt freshmen Austin Pennick and Sam Sussenguth were strong off the bench with 11 points apiece, and Sussenguth completed a double-double with 11 rebounds.
CLEANING THE GLASS:
North Dakota State returns its top two rebounders from a year ago in senior forward Andre Smith (8.0 rpg) and sophomore forward Brett Winkelman (6.9 rpg). NDSU outrebounded its opponent 22 times in 28 games last year, helping the Bison rank seventh in Division I rebounding margin last year at +7.7 rebounds. Texas, Connecticut, Charleston, Oklahoma, North Carolina and LSU took the top six spots, in that order.3-POINT SHOOTING: North Dakota State's top three 3-point shooters return from last year's club that ranked sixth in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage. The Bison made 176 of 438 attempts for 40.2 percent behind Southern Utah, UC Irvine, Portland State, Air Force and Notre Dame. Forward Brett Winkelman led the Bison in 3-point percentage at .471, guard Mike Nelson was second at .444, and guard Ben Woodside led all Bison players with 52 made 3-pointers while shooting .409.
FOUL SHOOTING: North Dakota State ranked as high as eighth in the nation last year in free-throw shooting percentage before finishing the year ranked 47th. NDSU shot 73.3 percent from the foul line, led by guard Mike Nelson's 90 percent, but his 54 makes in 60 attempts were not enough to qualify for the national statistics.
LUNDE RETURNS: North Dakota State sophomore forward Tom Lunde is back on the active roster after sitting out the final 16 games of last season with a concussion. He missed three home games in December before trying to make a comeback at Idaho, where he was injured again. He played in only nine games.
ONE YEAR OLDER: The youngest team in Division I men's basketball last year is now one year older. North Dakota State's roster listed nine freshmen last year. Now the Bison have five freshmen and six sophomores. The only upperclassmen are senior forward Andre Smith, who is in his second year with the Bison, and walk-on junior college transfer Matt Rosenberg, who cannot play this season.
REDSHIRTS: First-year freshmen players Freddy Coleman, a guard from St. Paul, Minn., and Michael Tveidt, a forward from Pierre, S.D., are expected to redshirt during the 2006-07 season. Both players would have four years of competition in the Mid-Continent Conference and three years of NCAA tournament eligiblity starting in 2008-09.
JERSEY NUMBERS: There has not been a single-digit number on a modern-day Bison men's basketball roster until this year. Tom Lunde will wear 0 and Freddy Coleman will wear 4 in NDSU's new white and green uniforms. There will be three changes when the Bison wear their alternate yellow jerseys. Lunde will revert back to his former number 42, Coleman will wear 14, and Michael Tveidt will wear 24 instead of 23.
BISON SIGN ONE EARLY: North Dakota State signed Shakopee (Minn.) High School star Eric Carlson to a National Letter of Intent during November's early signing period. Carlson, a 6-foot-5, 190-pound forward, averaged 25.3 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game last year.
THE RECLASSIFICATION: North Dakota State is in its fourth year of its five-year NCAA reclassification from Division II to Division I. The move was announced in 2002 and the Bison entered an exploratory year in 2003-04 while retaining membership in Division II and the North Central Conference. This is NDSU's third season as a Division I independent before joining the Mid-Continent Conference next year.
BISON INVITED TO MID-CON: North Dakota State accepted an invitation Aug. 31 to join the Mid-Continent Conference for the 2007-08 season. IPFW and South Dakota State also accepted invitiations to push Mid-Con membership to 10 teams in 2007-08. NDSU will be immediately eligible for the regular-season conference championship, but will not participate in the postseason conference tournament until becoming an active Division I member in 2008-09.
MILES ON WIN LIST: North Dakota State head coach Tim Miles is in his sixth season at the helm of the Bison and he is sixth on the NDSU wins list with an 80-64 record. Miles needs 11 wins to tie Marv Skaar for fifth place.
