Box Score DAVIS, Calif.--Steve Walker connected on a 10-yard touchdown pass to John Majeski with four seconds left to lift No. 5-ranked North Dakota State to an incredible 28-24 comeback win over UC Davis in a Great West Football Conference game played Saturday, Nov. 4, at Toomey Field.
North Dakota State (8-1, 2-0 GWFC) is scheduled to host No. 6 Cal Poly (6-3, 2-1 GWFC) in the Harvest Bowl at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11 at the Fargodome. No. 2-ranked Montana defeated Cal Poly 10-9 in Missoula on Saturday. The Bison are tied with South Dakota State first place in league play with 2-0 records.
It's the biggest comeback since 2003 when NDSU erased a 22-point, 24-2 halftime deficit against Montana.
Craig Dahl intercepted a pass with 2:28 left to play to set up the Bison winning TD drive at the 23-yard line. Walker had to complete a pair of fourth down passes to Kole Heckendorf and Majeski to keep the 16-play, 77-yard scoring drive alive. Dahl also recovered a fumble at the end of the game
The Bison made things interesting in the second half after falling behind 24-0. NDSU trimmed the lead to 24-14 heading into the fourth quarter. Kyle Steffes took a pass from Steve Walker and then threw six yards to Jerimiah Wurzbacher.
Walker found Heckendorf down the right sideline for a 47-yard scoring pass in the third quarter. It was the longest scoring pass play of the season for NDSU.
Walker completed 18 of 39 passes for 257 yards, two TDs and one interception. Heckendorf caught seven passes for 115 yards as seven different Bison players made a reception. Travis White extended his consecutive game with a catch to 23 games.
North Dakota State converted 10 of 11 third down plays in the second half and 10 of 16 overall.
North Dakota State closed to within 24-21 with 7:06 left on a Kyle Steffes four yard run. Steffes rushed for 111 yards on 23 carries. He surpassed 100 yards for the seventh time this season and 19th time in his career. Steffes went over 1,000 yards for the third straight season -- becoming the first running back in school history to achieve the feat. He also moved to No. 2 all-time in rushing at NDSU.
North Dakota State's defense held UC Davis to 37 yards in the second half and 289 yards of total offense overall. The Aggies were held to 74 yards rushing by the Bison. NDSU has held all nine opponents to 100 yards or less this season.
Linebacker Ramon Humber led the Bison defense with nine tackles, while defensive tackle Justin Frick recorded a pair of second half sacks that disrupted the UC Davis offense.
UC Davis quarterback Jon Grant scored three touchdowns rushing in the first half. He led the Aggies on a 14-play, 72-yard drive to open the game. Grant completed 7 of 8 passes for 45 yards during the drive. He connected on a key fourth down pass to Tony Kays.
Grant completed 19 of 24 passes for 184 yards in the first half. He finished 23 of 38 for 215 yards and one interception. Kays caught nine passes for 115 yards in the opening half. He finished with 11 catches for 138 yards overall.
North Dakota State had a chance score before halftime but stopped a yard short of the goal line just before halftime. The Aggies put together scoring drives following a blocked field goal and a NDSU fumble.
UC Davis scored on the game's opening drive with Jon Grant sneaking over from the one yard line. The Aggies covered 72 yards in 14 plays that consumed 7:05 of the first quarter clock. Grant completed 7 of 8 passes for 45 yards during the drive. He connected on a key fourth down pass to Kays.
