Jackrabbits Halt Bison Streak for United Soccer Conference Championship

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C.?For the third straight women's soccer contest between North Dakota State and South Dakota State, the game came down to a single goal. In the United Soccer Conference championship match on Sunday, Nov. 5, the Jackrabbits upended an NDSU bid for a Division I conference title with a 1-0 win at Howard University's Greene Stadium, ending a five-match winless streak against the Bison to claim the USC crown.

A second-period goal by SDSU's Kellyn Farrell was the difference maker in the victory. Farrell received a perfectly laid long cross from teammate Kelsey Worcester in the 74th minute. Farrell headed the ball inside the post from 10 yards for the go-ahead score.

Monica Morgan was active in front of the net for the Bison, stopping seven shots while protecting the net from five corner kicks. NDSU had several scoring threats in the first and second period.

Pushing the pace minutes after the Jackrabbit goal, Lorraine Thompson flicked a head up field to an awaiting Michelle Martinez. Finding a clearing, Martinez struck ball from the left side snuck to the right of SDSU keeper Nicole Lograsso but also flew right of the post.

South Dakota State ended the year going 4-0-1 in its last five matches to finish at 8-9-3 on the season. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Bison who concluded the year at 13-7-1. Farrell's goal also broke a string of 460 consecutive minutes of shutout defense by the Herd, with the next previous goal given up at Northern Iowa on Oct. 22.
