
Second-Half Shooting Carries Bison Past Southwest Minnesota State, 72-68

FARGO, N.D.--North Dakota State erased a 15-point first-half deficit to defeat Southwest Minnesota State 72-68 in college men's basketball Thursday.
North Dakota State (7-4) used a 13-2 run in the second half to get back within three points with 12:50 to play, and the Bison took their first lead since the opening basket of the game with 10:59 left when Ben Woodside scored to make it 50-49.
Southwest Minnesota State (7-4) answered on the next possession but the Bison went up for good when Austin Pennick started an 8-0 run with a jumper at the 9:15 mark.
Jeremy VanKlompenburg brought the Division II Mustangs back within a point again with two free throws at 4:19. NDSU led by no more than five the rest of the way.
NDSU shot 62 percent in the second half to outscore Southwest 46-28 after intermission.
Brett Winkelman led the Bison with 20 points. He scored 16 in the second half, including a pair of 3-pointers and another field goal during the 13-2 run that brought the Bison within 48-45.
Mike Nelson scored 19 points for NDSU, and teammate Andre Smith notched his fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Smith had three of NDSU's eight blocked shots.
Southwest Minnesota State went on an 11-0 run less than four minutes into the game to take a 15-6 lead.
The Mustangs made seven of their eight 3-pointers in the first half to go up 40-26 at the break.
VanKlompenburg finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds for his first collegiate double-double. Matt Fletcher added 15 points for the Mustangs.
North Dakota State returns to action next Thursday, Dec. 28, against Mayville State (9-4). Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Bison Sports Arena.
