North Dakota State Blanks Ball State 1-0, Bison Rally Past Loyola 4-1 at Hawkeye Classic

IOWA CITY, Iowa--Allison Bakke tossed a two-hit shutout as North Dakota State blanked Ball State 1-0 and the Bison rallied in the seventh to defeat Loyola (Ill.) 4-3 in  two games played Sunday, March 26, at the Hawkeye Classic. Host Iowa won the tournament with a 4-0 record.

The Bison (9-19), who finished 3-1 at the tournament, are scheduled to play at Iowa State (15-12) at noon Monday, March 27. NDSU has won four of its last five games.

Lynnae Foshag walked and Grete Peterson singled with one out to get things started for NDSU in the seventh against Loyola. Kelly Cantrell singled and during the play, Foshag scored on a Loyola error and Peterson advanced to third. Cantrell stole second and Kelly Vivant's ground out chased Peterson home. Cantrell scored on a wild pitch to put the Bison ahead 4-1.

North Dakota State freshman pitcher Andi Padilla shut the door in the seventh to secure the victory. Padilla worked four solid innings of relief to improve to 2-2. She struck out three, allowed two hits and walked one. Loyola's Kristi Crosson (1-11) was tagged with the loss.

Foshag, a junior from Missoula, Mont., led NDSU with a double and single. Cantrell, a freshman from Omaha, Neb., added a pair of singles as the Bison outhit the Ramblers 7-5. Trish Oberhaus led Loyola with a double and single.

North Dakota State broke a 0-0 deadlock to score the second game's only run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Peterson singled with two outs, stole second and scored on Cantrell's single to center. Foshag had NDSU's other hit, a lead-off single in the first.

Bakke, who was making her fourth start of the season, kept Ball State (6-9) off stride during the contest. She limited the Cardinals to singles by Amanda Pick and Katie Pilger. Bakke (1-2) struck out eight and walked one in her third complete game of the season. Amanda Pick (2-3) was tagged with the loss. Pick walked four and struck out two.
