
Bison Hang On For Fifth Straight Win, 61-53 Over Utah Valley State

FARGO, N.D. (AP)--Brett Winkelman and Andre Smith scored 18 points apiece as North Dakota State won its fifth straight men's basketball game, topping Utah Valley State 61-53 on Saturday.
Winkelman scored 14 points in the first half for the Bison (13-6), who went on a 24-9 run midway through the first half to take charge.
Winkelman was 6-for-8 from the field as NDSU took a 36-24 lead at halftime.
The Wolverines (13-7) rallied from a 50-31 deficit, scoring 12 straight points to get within 50-43 with 9:31 left.
UVSC trailed 57-49 with 4:55 to play but went more than four minutes without a point.
Smith was 9-for-15 from the field and had 11 rebounds and four blocked shots for NDSU. Mike Nelson added 16 points.
The Bison shot 51 percent for the game, while the Wolverines shot just 36 percent.
Utah Valley State got 12 points from David Heck. He was the only Wolverine in double figures. Richard Troyer had nine points and nine rebounds.
A crowd of 3,314 was on hand at the Bison Sports Arena. It was the second largest home crowd of the season at NDSU behind the sellout of 6,110 to see the Kansas State game Dec. 9.
North Dakota State begins a five-game road stretch next Saturday, Feb. 3, at South Dakota State.
The Jackrabbits (5-15) defeated Texas-Pan American 82-67 in Brookings, S.D., on Saturday night.
