Bison Soccer Falls 2-1 in Overtime to Southern Utah in Season Finale

Box Score

CEDAR CITY, Utah ? North Dakota State closed out the 2007 in heartbreaking fashion, falling to the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah 2-1 in overtime in Cedar City, Utah.  NDSU finishes the season at 11-7-1 and 3-4-1 in its inaugural Summit League campaign.

Southern Utah (7-5-5, 3-2-3), playing for a spot in the postseason Summit League tournament, came out with an aggressive, physical game plan and took the early lead off an Erica Berlin goal in the 16th minute, an advantage they would carry with them into the half.

North Dakota State came out the aggressor in the second half, as sophomore Lorraine Thompson put a shot past Thunderbird goalkeeper Holly Senter in the 50th minute to tie the game at one.  As in previous games, the Bison had chances to take the lead but were unable to get the breaks on the road, and found itself in its fourth overtime game in the last six outings.

In the extra period, Southern Utah's Shaley Ipson put the game-winner past sophomore goalkeeper Monica Morgan in the 98th minute to seal the victory for the Thunderbirds.  The loss was a heartbreaking final game for Ashley Chandler, Kelsey Hohol, Michelle Martinez, Jessica Nei, Patty Romeo and Jami Rozell, but does nothing to diminish the impact these players had on the NDSU soccer program.

"I can't say enough about these girls and what they have brought to this program," said head coach Pete Cuadrado.  "They were there to help us through the transition to Division I, they helped lead this team to four 10-win seasons.  They are the type of student-athletes that you want representing your school."

Thompson finished the season with five goals, while Morgan made four saves in net to improve her season total to 88 and her career total to 170, which moves her into second place on the all-time list.  Martinez finished as the team's leading scorer for the fourth straight season, tallying six goals and three assists and finishing the 2007 campaign with 15 points.
