THREE CLOSE ONES: North Dakota State has defeated Top 25 teams this season (Marquette) and last season (Wisconsin), and the Bison have had near misses against three unranked major-conference foes this year. NDSU's losses to Texas Tech (85-81), Kansas State (83-81) and Colorado State (82-80) were by a combined eight points. One difference has been at the free-throw line, where the Bison averaged 13 of 18 in those three losses compared to 23 of 32 for the three opponents combined.
SELLOUT CROWD: North Dakota State drew a sellout crowd of 6,110 to the Bison Sports Arena to see the Kansas State Wildcats of the Big 12 on Saturday, Dec. 9. It was the first sellout since February 2005 when NDSU hosted South Dakota State. The Bison led Kansas State by seven at halftime and by as many as 10 points in the second half before the Wildcats clawed back for an 83-81 victory. K-State made five three-pointers and shot 65 percent in the second half to make up ground on the Bison.
ANOTHER TOP 25 UPSET: North Dakota State defeated its second Top 25 team in two seasons with a 64-60 win over then eighth-ranked Marquette on Dec. 2 in the championship game of the Marquette Pepsi Blue and Gold Classic. Andre Smith had 26 points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks to carry the Bison. Mike Nelson scored 19 points and Brett Winkelman had a game-high 10 rebounds plus eight points. North Dakota State's other Top 25 win was against then 15th-ranked Wisconsin on January 21, 2006, when the Bison won 62-55 in Madison.
BLOCKED SHOTS RECORD: North Dakota State broke a 15-year-old school record with 12 blocked shots against Wisconsin-Green Bay on Saturday, Nov. 25. Bison center Lucas Moormann had a career-high five blocks to help NDSU break the old mark of 11 swats against Northern Colorado in February 1992.
JERSEY NUMBERS: There has not been a single-digit number on a modern-day Bison men's basketball roster until this year. Tom Lunde will wear 0 and Freddy Coleman will wear 4 in NDSU's new white and green uniforms. There will be three changes when the Bison wear their alternate yellow jerseys. Lunde will revert back to his former number 42, Coleman will wear 14, and Michael Tveidt will wear 24 instead of 23.
REDSHIRTS: First-year freshmen players Freddy Coleman, a guard from St. Paul, Minn., and Michael Tveidt, a forward from Pierre, S.D., are expected to redshirt during the 2006-07 season. Both players would have four years of competition in the Mid-Continent Conference and three years of NCAA tournament eligiblity starting in 2008-09.
BISON SIGN ONE EARLY: North Dakota State signed Shakopee (Minn.) High School star Eric Carlson to a National Letter of Intent during November's early signing period. Carlson, a 6-foot-5, 190-pound forward, averaged 25.3 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game last year.
HISTORY OF THE PROGRAM:
North Dakota State is in its 108th season of men's basketball and has played 2,365 games in that time with a 1383-984 record (.584). The Bison have put together 77 winning seasons, including a school-record 26 victories in 1924-25. NDSU won 10 championships in the North Central Conference and made eight NCAA Division II regional tournament appearances with a 9-8 playoff record before moving into Division I play in 2004-05.THE RECLASSIFICATION: North Dakota State is in the fourth year of its five-year NCAA reclassification from Division II to Division I. The move was announced in 2002 and the Bison entered an exploratory year in 2003-04 while retaining membership in Division II and the North Central Conference. This is NDSU's third season as a Division I independent before joining the Mid-Continent Conference next year.
BISON INVITED TO MID-CON: North Dakota State accepted an invitation Aug. 31 to join the Mid-Continent Conference for the 2007-08 season. IPFW and South Dakota State also accepted invitiations to push Mid-Con membership to 10 teams in 2007-08. NDSU will be immediately eligible for the regular-season conference championship, but will not participate in the postseason conference tournament until becoming an active Division I member in 2008-09.
