FARGO, N.D.--North Dakota State forward Brett Winkelman was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® University Division men's basketball second team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
Winkelman, a 6-foot-6 sophomore from Morris, Minn., has a 3.81 cumulative grade-point average in industrial engineering and management. He was a first-team Academic All-District 7 selection and a repeat pick to the Division I independent men's basketball all-academic team earlier this month.
Winkelman is the third CoSIDA Academic All-American® in NDSU men's basketball history, and he is the first to advance higher than third team. Forward David Erbes was a University Division third-team award winner in 2004-05 and center Joe Regnier was a College Division third-teamer in 1988-89.
Winkelman, who on Tuesday was named Division I independent Player of the Week for the second time this season, is averaging 15.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game for North Dakota State (18-8).
He was joined on the second team by Southern Illinois senior Jamaal Tatum, Creighton senior Anthony Tolliver, Belmont junior Justin Hare, Harvard senior Jim Goffredo, and Coastal Carolina junior Jack Leasure.
First-team selection Adam Haluska, a senior at Iowa, was voted University Division Academic All-American of the Year. He has a 3.5 GPA in finance and marketing, and he leads the Big Ten in scoring with 20.4 points per game.
To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors, student-athletes must have a 3.20 or better cumulative GPA on a 4-point scale, have sophomore athletic standing, and be a starter or key reserve for their team.
North Dakota State has had 48 student-athletes earn 70 CoSIDA Academic All-America® awards since 1971. Nineteen of the awards have been earned at the University Division level since 2004-05 when NDSU reclassified from NCAA Division II to Division I.
