FARGO, N.D.--Redshirt freshman guard Josh Vaughan came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points, all on 3-pointers, as North Dakota State rolled over New Jersey Tech 104-52 in college men's basketball Thursday.
Vaughan tripled his season total for 3-pointers as the Bison (19-8) moved within one victory of their first 20-win season as a Division I program.
Vaughan made six of eight 3-point attempts, one shy of tying the school single-game record, and the Bison were 10-for-21 from the arc altogether.
CoSIDA Academic All-American forward Brett Winkelman led the Bison with 20 points. He also had six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Forward Andre Smith had 19 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals, and guard Ben Woodside chipped in 17 points and seven assists for the Bison.
NDSU shot 63 percent from the field in the first half to take a 49-32 lead at halftime.
The Bison went on a 17-4 run to go up 24-8 with 12:14 before intermission.
NDSU stretched the lead to 28 points less than six minutes later with a 14-0 run, which included Vaughan making three 3-pointers on consecutive possessions in a 1-minute span.
New Jersey Tech (5-23) shot just 19 percent in the second half and scored only 20 points as the Bison pulled away to the 52-point victory.
It was NDSU's most lopsided win in modern-day history dating back to 1950, and it was the first 100-point game for North Dakota State since a 104-74 rout of Dickinson State in December 2003.
North Dakota State put two recently added football players, Jerimiah Wurzbacher and Nick Mertens, into the game to a standing ovation at the 9:15 mark of the second half.
Wurzbacher hit a pair of free throws and one field goal, and hauled in five rebounds in eight minutes of play. He added an assist on Vaughan's fourth 3-pointer of the night and blocked a shot on NJIT's next possession.
Mertens had one field goal and snared three rebounds in nine minutes of action.
Kraig Peters and Courcy Magnus scored 11 points apiece to lead New Jersey Tech.
NJIT forward Nesho Milosevic had a game-high 14 rebounds, but the Bison finished with a 41-35 edge on the backboards.
North Dakota State hosts Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne on Saturday night in the season finale for both teams. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Bison Sports Arena.
IPFW is 12-16 on the year after an 83-72 win at South Dakota State on Thursday night.
