Bison Score Three Times in Second Half To Rally Past Creighton 3-2

Box Score

FARGO, N.D. ? Led by senior Michelle Martinez, the North Dakota State soccer team rallied to score three times in the second half to defeat Creighton 3-2 at the Ellig Sports Complex on Friday, Sept. 14.  The Bison wrap up their season-opening five-game homestand at 4-1-0.

The Bluejays struck first as Lindsay Vaught took a shot from the right side at goalkeeper Monica Morgan who made the initial save.  But teammate Toch Ihemelu was able to put back the rebound to give Creighton (3-2-0) the 1-0 lead at the half.  The Bluejays struck again in the 49th minute as Emily Orbell once again got control of a deflected save and fired a 15 yarder past Morgan to put the Bluejays on top 2-0.

But the Bison charged back, as Martinez fired a shot on Bluejay goalkeeper Kristen Casey in the 63rd minute that deflected off her hands right to freshman Candice D'Arcangeli who tapped in the rebound for her first collegiate goal, trimming the Creighton lead to 2-1.

Eight minutes later, Martinez took a feed from sophomore Ashley Dement and found herself on a breakaway.  She lobbed a shot that was just over the arm of Casey and landed in the far corner of the goal to knot the game up at two.  But Martinez wasn't done as in the 76th minute, sophomore Lorraine Thompson sent a corner kick to the far side of the goal where Martinez was waiting and sent a header past Casey for the eventual game-winner.  It was the first win for NDSU over Creighton, as the Bluejays had won the previous two games in the series.

It was a day full of milestones for Martinez, as her two goals on the afternoon increased her season total to four, and moved the senior into sole possesion of third place on the all-time goals list with 28.  It was the second this season Martinez had scored the game-winning goal and the sixth time in her Bison career, which moves her into seventh place all-time.  Along with the assist on the first NDSU goal, Martinez had a season-best five points in the victory and increased her all-time point total to 64, moving her into fifth place in the Bison record books.

North Dakota State hits the road for the first time this season, traveling to Wisconsin-Green Bay to battle the Phoenix on Sunday, Sept. 16.  The Bison then make trips to El Paso, Texas, and Colorado Springs, Colo., before returning home to battle Summit League opponent IUPUI on Friday, Oct. 5, at the Ellig Sports Complex.
