
Last-Second Shot Lifts Oakland Past North Dakota State, 77-74

ROCHESTER, Mich.--Erik Kangas made a 3-pointer with less than two seconds left to lift Oakland to a 77-74 win over North Dakota State in Summit League men's basketball Thursday, Jan. 31.
North Dakota State inbounded the ball from under its own basket with 1.9 seconds left but turned over the ball at midcourt as time expired without getting a shot.
Mike Nelson scored a season- and game-high 25 points for North Dakota State. Nelson was 9-for-11 overall and 5-for-5 at the 3-point line. The Bison set a school record shooting 71.4 percent (10-for-14) from the arc.
Three players scored in double figures for NDSU. Brett Winkelman had 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while Michael Tveidt scored 10 points with three rebounds off the bench.
Bison guards Ben Woodside and Josh Vaughan scored eight points apiece. Woodside added five assists and two rebounds.
North Dakota State (11-10, 5-5) controlled the first half after scoring 11 unanswered points to go ahead 11-3 in the first five minutes of the game.
NDSU led by as many as 14 when a Winkelman jumper made it 31-17 at the 6:15 mark, but Oakland closed the half on a 19-10 run to close within 41-36 at intermission.
Oakland took its first lead since the opening minutes when Tim Williams' layup at the 14:43 mark of the second half put the Golden Grizzlies ahead 47-46. The lead was never more than four for either team the rest of the way.
Johnathon Jones had 21 points and eight assists to lead the Golden Grizzlies (11-10, 6-4), while Kangas made four 3-pointers and finished with 18 points.
Derick Nelson had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Oakland, and Keith Benson finished with 12 points and four blocked shots.
North Dakota State is scheduled to play at IPFW (8-13, 5-5) at 4 p.m. ET on Saturday, Feb. 2. The Mastodons defeated South Dakota State 73-63 on Thursday.
