Late Pick, Field Goal Lifts Wyoming Past North Dakota State 16-13

Box Score

LARAMIE, Wyo.--Jake Scott kicked a 29-yard field goal with 4 seconds left to give the Wyoming Cowboys a 16-13 victory over Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) No. 1-2 ranked North Dakota State University before a crowd of  19,156 at War Memorial Stadium on Sept. 13.

North Dakota State remains on the road for its Missouri Valley Football Conference opener at No. 23/24 Youngstown State University (1-2, 0-1 Valley Football) at 6 p.m. (ET) Saturday, Sept. 20, at Stambaugh Stadium. The Penguins defeated Central State University 38-0 on Saturday.

Scott's field goal was set up by Derrick McMahen's interception of a pass by NDSU quarterback Nick Mertens. That gave Wyoming (2-1) the ball on the Bison 28 yard line with 1:28 left.

The field goal capped Wyoming's comeback. All of Wyoming's points came in the second half after NDSU had scored the game's first 13 points. The Bison were ahead at halftime 10-0.

Devon Moore sparked a struggling Wyoming offense, racking up 145 yards rushing and scoring a touchdown.

Wyoming's struggles on offense, which gained just 216 total yards and scored no touchdowns in a loss the previous week against Air Force, continued into the game against NDSU (2-1).

In the first half against the Bison, the Cowboys were plagued by penalties, sacks, dropped passes and a fumble. They gained just three first downs and 78 total yards.

NDSU, meanwhile, gained a 10-0 halftime lead on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Mertens to Tyler Jangula and a 34-yard field goal by Shawn Bibeau.

But after the Bison ended their first possession in the second half with a 32-yard field goal by Bibeau, Moore broke off a 41-yard run and then scored from 2-yard out for Wyoming's first offensive touchdown in six quarters.

Scott finished off two other Wyoming drives with a pair of 28-yard field goals to tie the game.

Mertens completed 16-of-30 passes for 215 yards passing, three interceptions and one TD. Kole Heckendorf caught three passes for 103 yards. Heckendorf extended his consecutive game streak with at least one reception to 28 games. He has caught a pass in 35 of 36 games in his career.

North Dakota State held a 313 to 266 edge in total offense. Pat Paschall rushed 14 times for 71 yards, while Tyler Roehl left the game after only four yards on three carries.

Ramon Humber led the Bison defense with 11 tackles including seven solo stops and 1.5 sacks, while Nick Schommer made a career-high 10 tackles including seven solos. Matthew Gratzek forced a fumble recovered by Darius Purcell.

Wyoming was the fifth team in the Football Bowl Subdivision, formerly Division I-A, that the Bison have played since NDSU moved up from Division II to the Football Championship Subdivision, formerly I-AA. NDSU is now 3-2 against FBS schools.
