Box Score BOISE, Idaho - Portland State scored a late first half goal to defeat the North Dakota State soccer team, 1-0, on Sunday, Sept. 20. The Bison went 0-1-1 this weekend at the Soccer Etc-Nike Invitational and fall to 2-5-2 this season.
Sophomore Laura Wagner got the offense going immediately, forcing Vikings goalie Cris Lewis into a save less than two minutes into the game. The Bison tallied four shots on goal in the first half, compared to two for Portland State.
With the game headed for a scoreless draw at the half, Portland State's Megan Martin gave her side a 1-0 lead after putting the ball just inside the left post in the 44th minute.
Midway through the second half, sophomore Michelle Gaffaney cleared a Portland State shot off the goal line to keep the deficit at one. Despite four shots on goal in the second half, the Bison couldn't break though to get the equalizer. Junior Quin Ryan had one final chance in the 89th minute, but sent her shot wide left.
Juniors Abbey Stratton and Candice D'Arcangeli each had two shots on goal to lead the Bison. Sophomore goalie Kalani Bertsch made three saves in the loss.
The Bison have a weekend off before returning to the Ellig Sports Complex to host Mary in the final non-conference game of the year on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 4 p.m.
