Box Score TEMPE, Ariz.--Erika Petruzzi hit a pair of home runs to lead Purdue University to a 5-3 win over North Dakota State University at Farrington Stadium on Sunday, Feb. 14, during the final day of Arizona State's Kajikawa Classic.
North Dakota State finished the tournament with a 3-2 record. The Bison are scheduled to play in the University of South Florida's La Quinta Inn and Suites Tournament on Feb. 19-21 in Tampa. NDSU opens with North Carolina State (2-1) at 11:15 a.m. and Hofstra at 6 p.m.
Petruzzi smacked her first home run, a two-run shot, with two outs in the bottom of the first to put the Boilermakers ahead 2-0.
Purdue (1-4) extended the lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the third. Petruzzi and Shelby Kramer each hit solo home runs to highlight a three-run inning. Liane Horiuchi and Petruzzi both had two hits for the Boilermakers.
North Dakota State rallied with the long ball. Maryssa McKenzie hit a solo home run to right field in the fifth and Melissa Chmielewski cracked a two-run home run to right center in the sixth.
Chmielewski finished with a pair of hits against Purdue. She went 7 for 15 in the Classic with three home runs, three runs scored and seven RBI.
Randi Parks (2-1) and Whitney Johnson each worked three innings with Parks picking up the loss for North Dakota State. Johnson struck out three and walked a pair in relief. Julia Rice (1-0) pitched the first 5.1 innings to pick up the win for Purdue, while Suzie Rzegocki retired all five batters she faced for the save.
