FORT COLLINS, Colo.--Melissa Chmielewski and Taylor Mortensen each went 2 for 4 with four runs batted in as North Dakota State University doubled up on Utah Valley University by the score of 12-6 at Colorado State Classic on Saturday, March 6, at Ram Field. The Bison are 1-2 in the tournament.

North Dakota State (9-7) closes out tournament play against Utah State (8-4) at 10 a.m. and Utah Valley (3-8) at noon Sunday, March 7.

The Bison used a pair of five-run innings in the second and the sixth to build a 10-0 lead on Utah Valley. NDSU was outhit 13-8 in the game, but took advantage of seven walks and three errors to make each hit count. Five different Bison players scored two runs.

North Dakota State needed only two hits to put together the five-run second inning. Chmielewski had a two-run single to left center and Mortensen had a RBI base hit. A bases-loaded walk forced home one run, while an Utah Valley error chased in another.

The Bison extended the lead to 10-0 in the top of the sixth inning. Chmielewski came through with another two RBI single, while Morentsen belted a three-run home run to left center. It was Mortensen's third home run of the season.

However, Utah Valley made things interesting in the bottom of the sixth with a five-run frame of its own. Amanda Perez, who went 4 for 4 in the contest, led off the inning with a solo home run to center. Megan Kisner also drilled a bases-clearing triple for the Wolverines.

North Dakota State tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. Taylor Lynn tripled and scored on a Brea Konz single, while an UVU error pushed across the second run.

Whitney Johnson (7-5) picked up the win for NDSU. Johnson walked four and struck out two. Kyli Flanary (1-5) and Jessica Martin pitched for Utah Valley with Flanary recording the loss.
