Chmielewski, Rivera Spark North Dakota State Two-Win Day at Colorado State Classic

FORT COLLINS, Colo.--Melissa Chmielewski hit her third grand slam of the season and Whitney  Johnson tossed a one-hitter as North Dakota State defeated Utah State 9-1, and the Bison beat Utah Valley 7-3 on Sunday, March 7, during the final day of the Colorado State Classic at Ram Field. The Bison finish 3-2 in the tournament.

North Dakota State (11-7) is scheduled to play Wright State (6-10) at 10 a.m. Friday, March 12, in the opening game of the Texas A&M University Aggie Invitational at College Station.

Chmielewski, who went 2 for 2 with five RBI, did her damage early against Utah State (8-5). She hit a run-scoring double in the first inning and then belted her sixth career grand slam in the second frame. Chmielewski has five home runs this season.

NDSU shortstop Nicole Rivera took over after that and knocked in three runs over the fourth and fifth innings. Rivera went 2 for 4 with three RBI

Johnson, who improved to 8-5, allowed the Aggies just Simone Howard double in the second inning. She struck out five and walked one. Kate Greenough (3-3) and Mandy Harmon pitched for Utah State with Greenough.

In the second game, North Dakota State was limited to five hits, but turned a pair of double plays and key two-out hits to top Utah Valley (3-10). The Wolverines lined into a pair of double plays in the fourth and seventh innings.

Utah Valley led 2-0 following Megan Kisner's first home run of the season in the second inning. Amanda Perez went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

However, Laurel Pipkin, Brea Konz, Elisa Victa and Chmielewski each drove in runs with two outs. Konz had a two-out single that put the Bison ahead 6-2 in the fourth inning.

Randi Parks (3-2) recorded the win for NDSU. Parks allowed eight hits, struck out four and had no walks. Mandy Tapia and Kyli Flanary worked on the mound for Utah Valley with Tapia (0-5) picking up the loss.
