Creighton Powers Past North Dakota State 8-4, 14-1

OMAHA, Neb.--Creighton University hit eight home runs to power past North Dakota State University by the scores of 8-4 and 14-1 in a non-conference doubleheader played Monday, April 5, at the CU Sports Complex. The Bluejays broke a seven-game losing streak with the first game win, while the Bison losing streak was extended to six.

North Dakota State (4-5 Summit, 19-19) is scheduled to play Oakland University (5-4 Summit, 13-22) in a three-game Summit League series on April 9-10 in Rochester, Mich.

Creighton (2-5 Missouri Valley, 16-16) scored six runs over the first two innings to set the tone early. Amy Baker went 3 for 3 with a pair of home runs, six RBI and two runs scored. The Bluejays only had six hits in game one, but three went out of the park. Baker finished the doubleheader with 5 for 5 with 7 RBI, three home runs and three runs scored. 

Baker's first shot came in the first, a two-run home run to left center. Christa Ruf hit a two-run home run to right field and Baker added a two-run single in the second inning.

North Dakota State answered with single runs in the third and fourth innings to cut the deficit to 6-2. Cristina Borek had a RBI single in the third, while Taylor Mortensen led off the fourth inning with a solo home run. It was fourth home run of the season for Mortensen, who led the Bison with a 2 for 4 effort at the plate.

However, Creighton came right back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with Baker hitting her second two-run home run of the game.

The Bison scored twice in the top of the fifth inning to cut the deficit in half. Brea Konz lifted a sacrifice fly and Mortensen added a RBI bunt single.

Randi Parks (5-6) recorded the loss for NDSU. Kylie Hovinga (2-4) and Sammy Snygg worked on the mound for Creighton with Hovinga picking up the win.

The second game was all Creighton. Sixteen Blue Jays went to the plate and 13 runs crossed it in the first inning CU collected nine hits including five home runs. Renae Sinkler, Michelle Graner, Michelle Koch, Lauren Larson and Baker all went deep including a grand slam from Koch.

Koch led the 11-hit attack with a 2 for 3 effort that included five RBI. Graner, Baker and Larson each had two hits.

NDSU was paced by Laurel Pipkin, who went 2 for 3 with a RBI. 

Tara Oltman (13-7) tossed a three-hitter for the Bluejays. She struck out six and walked three. Whitney Johnson (14-13) and Parks pitched for the Bison with Johnson picking up the loss.
