Box Score ROCHESTER, Mich.--Whitney Johnson matched a career-high with 13 strikeouts, Melissa Chmielewski went 3 for 4 and Cristina Borek knocked in a pair of runs as North Dakota State defeated Oakland University 6-0 in a Summit League softball game played on a cold Friday, April 9, before 54 spectators at the OU Softball Complex.
NDSU (20-19, 5-5 Summit) snaps a six-game losing streak with the win. Due to weather conditions, the Bison and OU (13-23, 5-5 Summit) will play a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. (Central) Saturday, April 10.
North Dakota State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Taylor Mortensen laced a one-out double to right field, moved to third on an error and scored on Melissa Chmielewski's run-scoring single. With the RBI, Chmielewski tied her season-high of 52 set as a sophomore in 2008.
The Bison broke open a close game early with a five-run third inning to extend the advantage to 6-0.
Nine batters went to the plate as NDSU took advantage of five hits including a two-run double to right center by Borek and a two-out RBI double from Maryssa McKenzie. Center fielder Taylor Lynn also tacked on a run-scoring single. McKenzie and Lynn's base hits came with two outs. The Bison also took advantage of one of four Oakland errors.
North Dakota State outhit the Grizzlies 10-2 as Johnson allowed only a second inning double from Haley Emerson and a sixth inning single by Danielle Peterson.
Johnson, who improved to 15-13, reached double-figure strikeouts for the seventh time this season in completing her third shutout. She walked two batters. Brittany Doyle (8-11) and Alison Tansel pitched for OU with Doyle picking up the loss.
Laurel Pipkin and McKenzie each finished with two outs for NDSU.
