TERRE HAUTE, Ind.--D.J. McNorton ran for 100 yards and a
touchdown as top-ranked North Dakota State remained unbeaten with a 27-16
victory over 16th-ranked Indiana State in a Missouri Valley Football Conference game played Saturday, Nov. 5, before a crowd of 6,412 in Memorial Stadium.
Brock Jensen threw a touchdown pass for the Bison (9-0, 6-0 Missouri
Valley), who went ahead to stay on Sam Ojuri's 7-yard TD run in the
second quarter that made it 17-10. The Bison had zero turnovers for the sixth time this season.
McNorton's 4-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter put it out of
reach at 27-10. McNorton, who had 24 carries, reached 100 yards rushing for the first time this season and 10th time in his career. It was his first 100 yard rushing game since Eastern Washington last December.
With 2,542 career yards, McNorton moved up three spots to 8th all-time in rushing at NDSU, ahead of Kevin Feeney, Tyler Roehl and Pat Paschall. McNorton finished his career with 593 all-purpose yards against Indiana State.
The Sycamores (5-4, 3-3) scored the game's final
touchdown with 3 minutes to play on Ronnie Fouch's second TD pass of the
game, a 2-yarder to Donald Spencer. Justin Hilton caught four passes
for 103 yards for Indiana State.
North Dakota State's defense held Shakir Bell, the nation's top rusher, to 79 yards. The Bison came up with a pair of key turnovers in the second half on Colten Heagle's second interception of the season and Chad Willson's fumble recovery off a Coulter Boyer sack. Heagle led the Bison with 11 tackles, the third time he has reached double-figure stops.
Jensen, who completed passes to seven different receivers, was 17 of 30 for 182 yards and the TD -- a 30-yarder to Warren Holloway. Ryan Smith caught a career-high seven passes for 55 yards.
Indiana State outgained NDSU 373 to 343, but the Bison held a commanding 37:56 to 22:04 advantage in time of possession.
The Bison have two regular-season games remaining, at home next week against Youngstown State and at Western Illinois Nov. 19.
