#1 Arizona State Powers Past North Dakota State 10-0

TEMPE, Ariz.--Annie Lockwood hit a pair of home runs and No. 1-ranked and top-seed Arizona State smacked four homers overall to power past North Dakota State 10-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Division I Tempe Regional played Friday, May 20, before 1,668 fans at Farrington Stadium.

NDSU (30-26) is scheduled to play San Diego State (32-20) at 7:30 p.m. (Central) Saturday, May 21, in an elimination game. Arizona State (51-6) plays Long Beach State (38-16) at 5 p.m. (Central). The Bison-SDSU winner plays the ASU-LBSU loser at 10 p.m. (Central) in an elimination game.

North Dakota State opened the game with a pair of hits, as shortstop Nicole Rivera rifled a base hit up the middle and left fielder Elisa Victa singled off the glove of the Arizona State third baseman. However, Rivera was thrown out at the plate attempting to score off of a softly hit ground out by Brea Konz. Jamie Gay had a two-out single in the second.

The Sun Devils scored twice in the bottom of the first. Katelyn Boyd reached on a walk on the first of three illegal pitches that moved her to third base. Boyd scored on Lesley Rogers sacrifice fly in foul territory down the right field line. Kaylyn Castillo hit a solo home run with one out.

Arizona State broke open the game with six runs to extend the lead to 8-0 in the bottom of the second. Sam Parich hit a solo home run to left on an 0-2 pitch. Rogers contributed a two-run single and Lockwood belted a three-run shot to left center, her first of two homers

The Sun Devils closed out the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Mandy Urfer drilled a RBI double down the left field line. Lockwood hit her second home run, a long distance shot over the left field fence pushing her season total to 14. She went 2 for 3 with four RBI. Collectively, ASU has hit 73 homers this season.

Dallas Escobedo (27-3) pitched a three-hit shutout. Escobedo struck out one. Whitney Johnson (23-12) picked up the loss. She allowed eight hits, walked four and struck out two. Johnson's scoreless inning streak was snapped at 40.
