Bison Softball Drops Pair of Extra Inning Games to #15 Baylor, Texas-San Antonio

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WACO, Texas--North Dakota State dropped a pair of one-run, eight-inning decisions -- 1-0 to 15th-ranked Baylor University and 6-5 to the University of Texas-San Antonio -- on Tuesday, March 13, at Baylor's Getterman Stadium.

North Dakota State (14-11) is scheduled to play the University of Texas-Arlington in a doubleheader at 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 14. The Bison open Summit League play with a three-game series at IUPUI on March 16-17.

Baylor (17-5) scored an unearned run with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning to notch the win. The Bison had loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the frame, a line drive double play ended the threat. The Bears also turned a big DP in the top of the seventh inning.

Krista Menke (6-6) picked up the loss for NDSU. Menke matched a career-high with seven strikeouts. She allowed five hits and walked two.

Courtney Repka and Liz Paul (4-2) pitched for Baylor with Paul recording the win. The pair combined to strike out five, walk five and allow three hits.

Jenina Ortega led the Bison with a double, while Kayce Walker had two hits for Baylor. Each team stranded seven baserunners.

North Dakota State's dramatic rally from a four-run deficit in the seventh fell short as UTSA (10-11) scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth.

The Roadrunners had taken a 5-1 lead in the top of the seventh before the Bison came back with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game.

Jamie Gay doubled to left center with one out to start the rally. Brandi Enriquez followed with a RBI single. Taylor Mortensen then delivered a single to left center and the runners moved to second and third on an error.

Alex Sobrero kept things moving as she reached on an infield error to move the baserunners up a base. Katie Tamayo lifted a sacrifice fly to score Mortensen and advance Sobrero to second. Amanda Grable singled up the middle, moved to second on the throw and Sobrero to third. Brea Konz received an intentional walk and Cristina Borek drew a walk on a 3-2 count to tie the game.

UTSA took a 6-5 lead in the top of the eighth on Geena Garcia's sacrifice fly. Molly Fichtner had a double and two singles for the Roadrunners, who finished with 12 hits, while Megan Low went 3-for-3.

Mortensen, Konz and Enriquez each had a pair of hits for NDSU, which also turned a pair of doubles plays on defense against UTSA.

Menke took the loss on the mound for the Bison. She matched her career-high with seven strikeouts, while walking four. Haylee Staton (7-2) recorded the win. Staton allowed nine hits, walked three and struck out two.
