Box Score TEMPE, Ariz.--Tara Glover and Kellie Caplan combined to hit 6-for-7 from the top two spots as Boise State University defeated North Dakota State 7-4 in the second game Saturday, March 3, at Arizona State's Wilson/DeMarini Invitational played at Farrington Stadium.
North Dakota State (11-8) is scheduled to close out tournament play against Howard University (1-8) at noon Sunday, March 4. The Lady Bison play 5th-ranked Arizona State in Saturday's final game.
Boise State (12-7), which finished with 12 hits, broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to stake a 4-1 lead. Allie Crump's RBI double, Megan Harvey's run-scoring single up the middle and Glover's sacrifice fly were the key hits for the Broncos.
The Bison trimmed the deficit to 4-3 in the top of the fifth. Katie Tamayo's RBI single and Amanda Grable's RBI double to left center sparked the NDSU offense. Tamayo, who went 2-for-4, is hitting .583 (7-12) with seven RBI in the tournament. Grable also added a pair of hits.
Boise State went up 5-3 when Devon Bridges led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run. The Bison cut the lead to 5-4 in the top of the sixth, when Jamie Gay reached on an error, advanced to second on Brandi Enriquez' bunt single, moved to third on Taylor Mortensen's sacrifice bunt and scored on Alex Sobrero's ground out.
However, the Broncos added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Christine Capobianco hit a sacrifice fly and Bridges picked up her second RBI on a single.
Aubray Zell and Lela Work worked on the mound for Boise State. Zell (7-5) picked up the win, while Work earned her first save. The pair combined to allow seven hits, strike out nine and walk two.
Whitney Johnson and Krista Menke pitched for NDSU with Johnson (7-5) recording the loss. The pair combined to strike out six and walk two.
