ROSEMOUNT, Minn. – The North Dakota State women's soccer team saw a 1-0 first half lead disappear in the second half as they fell to the Creighton Bluejays 2-1 in a season-opening exhibition match at Dakota County Technical College on Saturday, Aug. 17. Sophomore Lizzie Lukas scored the lone goal for the Bison.
Lukas took command of a pass in the 36th minute close to midfield and was able to slip past Creighton goalkeeper Danielle Rice and bury the shot in the lower left corner of the goal to give the Bison a 1-0 advantage.
The Bluejays responded in the second half, scoring a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead, a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the match.
Kirstyn Corder scored Creighton's game-tying-goal in the 60th minute after she was able to get behind Bison goalie Sierra Bonham and kick the ball into the back of the net. Eight minutes later the Bluejays' Lauren Cingoranelli slotted a pass from Lauren Sullivan just out of reach of Bison goalkeeper Katie McCormick to score what proved to be the game-winning-goal for Creighton.
The Bison were outshot by the Bluejays in the match 15-6 but held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks taken. NDSU also made four saves in the match compared to two by Creighton. Anisha Kinnarath and Lukas led the Bison in shots-on-goal with two each.
The Bison return to action Tuesday, Aug. 20, when they host Bemidji State (Minn.) in their final exhibition match of the season for their home opener at 7 p.m. It will be North Dakota State's first-ever soccer match at historic Dacotah Field.
