QUEENS, N.Y. – The North Dakota State Bison women's soccer team (1-3-0) fell to Big East Conference member St. John's (4-0-0) at Belson Stadium in New York City Sunday evening, Sept. 1, 5-0.
The Red Storm's Amy Marron scored the first goal of the match in the 11th minute on a corner kick before Rachel Daly made it 2-0 St. John's after chipping a ball over Sierra Bonham's head and into the net in the 18th minute. The Bison didn't get their first shot of the match until the 19th minute, when Katie Tallas sent a shot over the goal post. The Red Storm increased their lead to 3-0 in the 28th minute on a header goal from Marron.
Five minutes into the second half St. John's increased its lead to 4-0 after Marron scored her second header of the match to complete the hat trick. The Bison had a chance to score a goal of their own five minutes later but Steph Jacobson's shot ricocheted off the post and the chance evaporated. Daly added another goal for the Red Storm in the 52nd minute to increase their lead over the Bison to 5-0. Lizzie Lukas nearly gave the Bison their first goal of the match in the 70th minute but her shot was saved by Red Storm goalkeeper Rachel Hoffman.
The Bison were outshot in the match 26-3. St. John's also had an 11-1 advantage in shots-on-goal and corner kicks taken.
Steph Jacobson, Lukas and Tallas each recorded shots for NDSU, with Lukas' being the lone shot-on-goal. Marron led the Red Storm offensively, recording a hat trick to go along with a pair of assists.
Bonham went 56 minutes in-goal for NDSU, making four saves but took the loss after allowing five goals to fall to 1-3-0 overall. Diana Poulin picked up the victory in-goal for the Red Storm.
The Bison return to the pitch this Friday, Sept. 6, when they host the Idaho Vandals (0-3-0) in the first-ever regular season soccer match at historic Dacotah Field. First kick is set for 5 p.m.
