FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State Bison women's soccer (3-3-0) defeated Minnesota-Duluth (1-1-0) Sunday afternoon, Sept. 8, at Dacotah Field, 3-1. NDSU's Lauren Miller netted two goals to tally a brace while Mikayla Jacobson also found the back of the net for the Bison.
The Bison scored first in the 37th minute, taking a 1-0 lead after Miller scored on a breakaway goal setup by a Steph Jacobson pass. The Bulldogs had two more opportunities in the first half to equalize but Bison goalkeeper Katie McCormick, making her first start of the season, made two key saves to maintain the 1-0 lead going into halftime.
North Dakota State wasted no time extending its lead to 2-0 after Miller's second goal of the match just six minutes into the second half. Katie Tallas controlled the ball on the outside of the box and found a sprinting Miller, who hammered the ball home for her second goal of the match.
The Bulldogs cut the Bison lead to 2-1 in the 68th minute after Kelli Klun angled a shot just outside the box to the upper right corner of the net.
Mikayla Jacobson answered for NDSU though, netting the first goal of her young collegiate career off a cross-pass from Jaclyn Scanlan to make it 3-1 Bison in the 84th minute.
The Bison outshot the Bulldogs 15-11 in the match, including a 6-3 lead in corner kicks.
The pair of goals by Miller gives her four total goals through six matches, tying teammate Anisha Kinnarath for the team-high.
McCormick took the win in-goal for the Bison, making four saves while allowing one goal to improve to 1-0 overall.
The Bison return to the pitch Wednesday, Sept. 11 when they trek north to face rival North Dakota in Grand Forks beginning at 4:30 p.m.
