UNI Stops NDSU 23-3 to End Record 33-Game Winning Streak

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – David Johnson rushed for 138 yards and 19th-ranked Northern Iowa snapped No. 1-ranked North Dakota State's FCS record 33-game winning streak 23-3 before a crowd of 14,777 at the UNI-Dome on Saturday, Nov. 8.

Michael Schmadeke kicked three field goals and UNI scored 10 points off turnovers to hand North Dakota State (9-1, 5-1 MVFC) its first road loss since an overtime defeat at Eastern Washington in the 2010 NCAA quarterfinals.

UNI outgained NDSU 311-175 in total yards and held the Bison without a touchdown for the first time since a 3-0 loss at Missouri State in the 2010 regular season finale.  NDSU managed only eight first downs and rushed 28 times for 43 yards, its lowest rushing output since the Missouri State game.

NDSU was in position to score the first points of the game when Tim Kilfoy picked off Carson Wentz's deflected pass at the UNI 3-yard line and returned it 45 yards to midfield.  The Panthers scored in four plays getting 13- and 16-yard passes from quarterback Brion Carnes before his 6-yard run made it 7-0.

Isaac Ales forced an NDSU fumble on the second play of the third quarter, and UNI cashed in with a 43-yard field goal by Schmadeke four plays later to go ahead 10-0.

NDSU had its best chance to score when Ben LeCompte's punt rolled out of bounds at the UNI 1 and the Bison defense got a 3-and-out.  CJ Smith followed with a 30-yard punt return to the UNI 12 before the Bison settled for a 21-yard Adam Keller field goal to make it 10-3.

Schmadeke connected from 36 and 42 yards in the fourth and UNI put the game away on Darrian Miller's 30-yard TD run with 5:04 left in the game.

Wentz finished 15 of 25 passing for 132 yards and John Crockett ran 17 times for 41 yards.  Crockett led NDSU with six catches for 32 yards and Zach Vraa made three catches for 48 yards.

Carlton Littlejohn led the NDSU defense with 11 tackles including six solo stops.  Kyle Emanuel had eight tackles with six solos and one sack, and Mike Hardie had a sack, forced fumble and two tackles for loss.

LeCompte punted 10 times averaging 48.1 yards including a long of 55 yards and three inside the UNI 20-yard line.

North Dakota State plays at Missouri State on Saturday, Nov. 15.  The Bears are 4-6 overall and 1-5 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference after a 32-22 home loss to Southern Illinois.
