INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA announced its 2014 Most Dominant Wrestler Awards on Wednesday, March 26, and North Dakota State senior 165-pounder Steven Monk finished fifth in the national standings for Division I.
 
Monk also finished seventh in all of Division I with 12 pins against D-I opponents.
 
The Most Dominant Wrestler standings are calculated by adding the total number of points awarded through match results and dividing that number by the total number of matches wrestled. Points awarded per match are as follows:
 
* Fall, forfeit, injury default or DQ = 6 points (-6 points for a loss)
* Tech falls = 5 points (-5 points for a loss)
* Major decision = 4 points (-4 points for a loss)
* Decision = 3 points (-3 points for a loss)
 
The awards only take into account matches between wrestlers from the same division. A minimum of 18 matches were required to be eligible for the Most Dominant Wrestler Award.
 
In 35 matches against Division I opponents this season, Monk registered 12 wins by fall, five technical falls, two major decisions and 14 decisions. Monk averaged 4.0 points, or a major decision, against Division I opponents this season.
 
The Wausau, Wis., native went 36-2 for the Bison this season and finished third at the NCAA Championships to become the highest national finisher in NDSU's Division I history. His final career record stands at 134-24, including 90 wins in his final 100 matches.
 
Monk finished in front of six of the 10 NCAA champions in the final Most Dominant Wrestler standings. David Taylor of Penn State claimed the award.
