Bison Softball Drops Pair to BYU, UC Davis

STANFORD, Calif.--Opponents took advantage of four-run innings as North Dakota State University lost 6-3 to BYU and 4-2 to UC Davis during the second day of the Louisville Slugger Classic played Saturday, March 8, at Stanford University's Smith Family Stadium.

NDSU (12-8) closes out tournament play against Portland State University (3-12) at noon CT Sunday, March 9. The Bison are 2-2 in Classic, while the Vikings were 0-3 heading into Saturday's late game against UC Davis.

BYU (9-13) used a four-run fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie in Saturday's opener. McKenzie St. Clair drilled a three-run home run to left field and Megan Arnold's solo shot to left took care of the scoring and put the Cougars up 6-2.

The Bison jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, taking advantage of a pair of BYU errors and Amanda Grable's RBI double. Grable went 4 for 6 with three doubles during the day, including a pair of two-baggers in the first game.

BYU used a walk, sacrifice bunt and NDSU throwing error to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third. Mercedes O'Connor connected for a run-scoring single to put the Cougars ahead 2-1 in the fourth. The NDSU error was the first in 60 innings.

North Dakota State tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth inning on Logan Moreland's solo home run. It was Moreland's second homer of the season.

The Bison cut the deficit to 6-3 in the top of the sixth inning with Alex Sobrero's RBI single up the middle.

NDSU threatened in the top of the seventh and loaded the bases with one out. However, BYU's McKenna Bull struck out both batters she faced to pick up the save. The Bison stranded 11 runners during the game.

Tori Almond (2-2) worked the first 6.1 innings for BYU. Almond allowed seven hits, struck out seven and walked six.

Krista Menke (8-3) and Tabby Bayers pitched for NDSU with Menke recording the loss. The pair combined to give up seven hits, strike out three and walk one.

UC Davis (8-16) sent nine batters to the plate in storming to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, taking advantage of two errors and three hits to do the damage. Kelly Zboralske ripped a bases-clearing double to left center and Chandler Wagner's infield RBI single highlighted the inning for the Aggies. Zboralske finished with a pair of doubles.

NDSU tried to chip away at the lead. Jackie Stifter was issued a bases loaded walk for one run n the bottom of the second. Grable laced a two-out RBI double to right center to cut the deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the third.

The Bison tried to rally, but were turned away by UC Davis pitcher Leah Munden. Munden (2-5) scattered four hits, struck out five and walked a pair in recording the complete game win.

Katie Thun (2-2) and Bayers pitched for NDSU with Thun picking up the loss. Bayers kept the Aggies at bay over the final 4.2 innings pitched with three strikeouts, two walks and two hits allowed.
