Baumann Defends Summit Javelin Title as Bison Throwers Score Big on Day One

FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State sophomore Quinn Baumann defended his Summit League title in the javelin on Thursday as the Bison throwers lifted the NDSU men's track & field team to a first-day lead at the Summit League Outdoor Championships.
For the second year in a row, Baumann led a group of NDSU throwers who racked up 32 of a possible 39 points in the javelin. NDSU swept the top four places in the event and claimed six of the top eight finishers. In the hammer throw, NDSU placed four men in the top six spots to add another 18 points.
Through the three events finalized on the first day of the meet, NDSU leads the men's race with 51 points. South Dakota stands in second place with 27 points.
Baumann won his second league javelin title with a throw of 208-8 (63.60m) this season, edging teammate Tyler Parker who claimed runner-up honors with his season-best mark of 207-1 (63.12m). Bison junior Adam Coykendall threw a season-best 194-4 (59.24m) for third place, and sophomore Brock Larson took fourth.
Decathletes Angus Stoudt and Grant Mjelstad placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the javelin.
In the hammer throw, junior Trevor Berner led a group of four Bison who finished 3-4-5-6. Sophomore Brandt Berghuis placed fourth, senior Josh Eiler was fifth, and redshirt freshman Alex Renner claimed sixth. Eiler's personal-best mark of 183-1 (55.80m) moved him up to No. 7 on the NDSU all-time list in the event.
Redshirt freshman Bryon Schuldt finished eighth in the 10,000m, crossing the line in 31:48.10 for NDSU's final point on the opening day.
Mjelstad opened with big personal-best efforts in the first three decathlon events – including a leap of 22-10.50 (6.97m) in the long jump – to hold the decathlon lead at the end of the first day. His score of 3,469 points is 77 points ahead of his best first-day total this season.
Junior Beau Gagnon is currently second in the decathlon with 3,400 points, and Stoudt is tied for third with 3,394.
The second day of the Summit League Outdoor Championships will get underway Friday with the decathlon 110m hurdles at 11 a.m. The men's shot put and long jump will start at 4 p.m., and running events are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
