FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State University men's track & field team will attempt to win its fifth consecutive Summit League outdoor team title as they host the 2014 Summit League Outdoor Championships this week on May 15-17. The three-day meet will be held at Schlanser Track and the Ellig Sports Complex on the NDSU campus.
Since joining The Summit League prior to the 2008 season, NDSU has won five of a possible six team titles in outdoor track & field. The Bison won the championship in their first shot in 2008, and then again each year from 2010-13. Last season, NDSU totaled 249 points in the final team standings for the highest mark of all its championship seasons.
South Dakota, the indoor team champions in 2013 and 2014, finished a distant second in the outdoor team race last season with 168 points.
Of the 21 events that will be contested, NDSU enters with the top performance in five. Seven of the top nine spots in the javelin belong to the Bison, as well as six of the top eight in the decathlon.
NDSU will look to get big contributions in the throwing events again this season after scoring a league-best 79 points in the four throwing events last year.
The Bison have two men looking to defend individual titles won at the 2013 outdoor meet – sophomore Quinn Baumann in the javelin and junior Jerome Begin in the 400m hurdles.
Competition begins at 11 a.m. Thursday with the decathlon 100m dash and the women's hammer throw.
