Berner’s Hammer Mark Tops Seven Titles for Bison Men

FARGO, N.D. – Bison athletes won seven event titles at the NDSU Tune-Up Meet on Friday, May 9, as the North Dakota State men's track & field team saw its last competition before hosting the Summit League Outdoor Championships next week.
 
Junior Trevor Berner became just the second man in NDSU history to top the 200-foot mark in the hammer throw, winning the event with his throw of 200-3 (61.05m). His new personal-best mark leads The Summit League this season.
 
NDSU sophomore Brandt Berghuis and redshirt freshman Alex Renner shared the top mark in the shot put, with both throwing 55-00.00 (16.76m). For Berghuis, it was a season-best effort and the third-best outdoor shot put throw of his career. He was also the runner-up to Berner in the hammer throw at 188-9 (57.54m), while Renner threw a nine-foot PR of 179-7 to rank 10th in school history.
 
NDSU put three men under 1:54 to sweep the top three places in the 800m. Senior Moses Heppner clocked a season-best 1:51.95 for the win, Alec Espeland ran 1:52.34 for second place, and Dalton Herding finished in a personal-best 1:53.32 for third. Running unattached, Bison freshman Elias Hendrickson came in fourth in 1:55.66.
 
Redshirt freshman Ben Neyers won the 200m dash in a personal-best time of 22.07 seconds. Senior sprinter Nate Mattson recorded season-best times in the 100m and 200m, running 11.00 for second place and 22.16 for third place respectively.
 
NDSU unattached freshman Aron Klos claimed the 400m hurdles title in 54.87, and redshirt freshman Angus Stoudt was the runner-up in the 110m hurdles in 14.83. Loren Bothun (14.85) registered a personal-best time in the 110m hurdles.
 
Unattached freshman Brant Gilbertson won the 1500m in 4:03.85. Chris Johnston cleared 6-04.00 (1.93m) to win the high jump, and Jamison Kath posted a personal-best mark of 21-11.00 (6.68m) for second in the long jump.
 
NDSU will host the Summit League Outdoor Championships in Fargo from May 15-17.
