SACRAMENTO, Calif. – North Dakota State freshman Rose Jackson used two personal-best performances on the second day of the USA Junior Combined Events Championships to rally to a fourth-place finish in the heptathlon and a personal-best score of 5,025 points. NDSU alumna Amanda Smock claimed her third USA outdoor championship in the triple jump, running her total of American titles in the event to six including her three indoor titles.
Smock won with a mark of 45-02.25 (13.77m), taking first by a margin of eight inches over Florida's Ciarra Brewer. Smock posted five jumps of 44 feet or better, while no other competitor registered more than one.
Smock, who competed for NDSU from 2001-04, also won USA outdoor titles in 2011 and 2012.
Standing in eighth place after the first day of competition, Jackson opened with a leap of 18-11.25 (5.77m) in the long jump for the second-best mark in the field. She posted her best throw of the year in the javelin at 99-2 (30.22m), and then closed the meet by winning the 800m in a personal-best 2:17.49.
Jackson, a Willmar, Minn., native, improved her own NDSU freshman record in the heptathlon beyond the 5,000-point barrier for the first time. No Bison freshman had ever topped 4,800 points in the heptathlon until Jackson did it three times this season.
Oregon signee Ashlee Moore and Texas A&M signee Shaina Burns took first and second, respectively.
The fourth-place finish gives Jackson the title of junior All-American. She now ranks sixth all-time at NDSU in the heptathlon, behind Division I All-Americans Whitney Carlson and Heather Zander and Division II All-Americans Andi Noel, Lisa Ristau and Lisa Kresky.
Of the seven events in the heptathlon, Jackson recorded personal-best performances in four during the meet – the 100m hurdles, 200m dash, javelin and 800m run.
