Friedman, Voss Highlight Grand View Open Effort

DES MOINES, Iowa--North Dakota State University 149-pound redshirt freshman Mitchell Friedman placed fourth and unattached 149 freshman Mark Voss finished fifth to highlight the young Bison effort at the Grand View Open held Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Charles S. Johnson Wellness Center.
Nine of the 11 wrestlers, either redshirt freshmen or freshmen, recorded at least one win at the tournament, while eight posted at least one pin. NDSU is scheduled to send youthful contingents to the Briar Cliff Open (Sioux City, Iowa) and the North Country Open (Collegeville, Minn.) on Saturday, Feb. 7.
Friedman (Oconto Falls, Wis.) won his first three matches including a pair by fall before falling 4-3 to Gustavo Martinez of Grand View in the Open semifinals. He recorded an 11-0 major decision over teammate Voss (Monticello, Minn.) in the consolation semifinals. Friedman lost by fall to Iowa State's Blayne Briceno in the third place match, but evened his overall record to 12-12.
Voss lost in the opening round of the tournament, but reeled off five straight wins including a pair of pins and a tech fall. He rebounded from the loss to Friedman to post a 3-1 decision over South Dakota State's Coltan Laganiere. Wrestling in his third tournament this season, Voss improved to 10-4 overall.
NDSU 285-pound redshirt freshman Jerrad Nieland (St. Cloud, Minn.), unattached 285 freshman Adam Freimund (Harvard, Ill.) and unattached 165 freshman Charley Popp (Crystal Lake, Ill.) each finished the tournament with 3-2 records. Nieland (7-12) had a pair of pins and a tech fall, Freimund (8-9) one pin, while Popp (11-4) claimed a pin and two tech falls.

Redshirt freshmen 125 Tirso Lara and 141 Tommy Walton each won one of three matches, while redshirt freshman 149 Nate Rykerd and unattached 149 freshman Alex Stuhl both went 0-2.
