FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State University head men's basketball coach David Richman announced the addition of two high school student-athletes on Wednesday, Nov. 11, the first day of the early signing period.
Seth Coatta of Minnetonka (Minn.) High School and Cameron Hunter of Olathe East (Kan.) High School have signed National Letters of Intent to continue their education and play basketball at NDSU. Both are expected to join the Bison in the fall of 2016.
"We're very pleased to welcome Cameron and Seth into the Bison family," said Richman. "Both young men identified themselves in the recruiting process as great people, willing students and talented basketball players – all three of which are staples of our program."
Hunter, a 6-1 guard, scored 8.2 points per game as a junior last season while averaging 5.2 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game. He helped lead Olathe East HS to a third-place finish at the Kansas 6A state tournament in 2015 and ranks second in school history with 129 assists in a single season. Hunter played AAU basketball for Team YOBO.
Hunter's father, Cedric Hunter, was the starting point guard for the University of Kansas' 1986 Final Four team. He holds the Jayhawks' single-season assists record and ranks third in Kansas history with 684 career assists.
"Cameron is a tenacious guard that competes on both sides of the ball," Richman said. "He is extremely unselfish, tough, and a winner. Cameron can really get in the paint on offense, while also guarding at a high level defensively."
Coatta, a 6-3 guard, averaged 18 points per game as a junior for the 2014-15 season, shooting an impressive 49 percent from three-point range and 90 percent at the free throw line. He also ranked second for Minnetonka with 4.4 rebounds per game and averaged 2.3 assists per contest.
Coatta (pronounced COAT-uh) drained 83 three-pointers in 26 games as a junior, making him one of the top shooters in the state of Minnesota. He averaged 14 points per game as a sophomore. Coatta was an All-Lake Conference selection in each of the last two seasons and played AAU basketball for Real Athletics.
"Seth is a scoring guard that shoots the ball at a high level," said Richman. "He's a tireless worker who's constantly showing a hunger to improve his game. Seth's ability to shoot the ball and score at all three levels makes him very fun to watch."
The two-time defending Summit League champion Bison open the 2015-16 season at UC Davis on Friday, Nov. 13. Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (CT) / 5:30 p.m. (PT).
