NDSU Hangs with No. 4/5 Iowa State, Falters Late in 84-64 Loss

AMES, Iowa – The North Dakota State men's basketball team dropped a road game at No. 4/5-ranked Iowa State on Tuesday night, 84-64.
Iowa State (6-0 overall) was led by 21 points from Abdel Nader, and senior forward Jameel McKay posted 15 points and 19 rebounds for the Cyclones.
Sophomores Paul Miller and A.J. Jacobson both scored 17 points for NDSU. Miller grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds for his first career double-double, and he also led the Bison with three assists. Jacobson scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half after sitting out with foul trouble.
NDSU (4-2) led 30-27 following a trey by Miller with 2:25 left in the first half. Iowa State responded by scoring the final nine points of the half to lead 36-30 at the break.
Iowa State pushed its lead to 11 at 45-34 just under three minutes into the second half, but the Bison battled back to get within two points at 50-48 on a tip-in by Dexter Werner with 12:46 to play.
NDSU was still within five at 61-56 with 8:47 remaining when the Cyclones went on an 11-0 run to put the game out of reach. Iowa State capitalized on three steals with a trio of fast-break layups to key the run.
Jacobson made 4-of-5 shots in the second half, including a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range in the first four minutes after halftime.
Carlin Dupree chipped in 11 points for NDSU, and Werner tallied seven rebounds. The Bison shot 36 percent for the game and 6-of-23 (26 percent) from beyond the arc. Iowa State shot 50 percent from the field.
Attendance at Hilton Coliseum was 14,272. This was the sixth time in NDSU's Division I era that the Bison took on a top-10 opponent.
NDSU will travel to take on Arkansas State on Friday, Dec. 4.
