FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State men's track & field team had strong showings in the heptathlon, shot put and 60m hurdles on the final day of the Summit League Indoor Track & Field Championships, but the Bison fell short in their bid to unseat team champion South Dakota on Saturday.
The Bison men earned six of the top eight places in the heptathlon and swept the top four spots, scoring 33 points in the team race to briefly pull ahead of the Coyotes. Angus Stoudt won the heptathlon title with 4,930 points – his first Summit League crown – and NDSU's Grant Mjelstad, Brock Larson and Beau Gagnon finished second, third and fourth, respectively.
Larson's total of 4,805 points moved him into the NDSU all-time top 10 list for the first time at No. 10.
Sophomore Alex Renner added 19 inches to his school record in the shot put, taking second place to lead five Bison placewinners in the event. Renner's mark of 59-07.00 (18.16m) exceeded the previous facility record and ranks 48th in the NCAA this season.
NDSU scored big in the shot put behind Renner, with freshman Payton Otterdahl placing fourth, Brandt Berghuis in fifth, Conrad Schwarzkopf in sixth, and Brian Blasey finishing seventh.
Bison senior Parker McKittrick earned a runner-up finish in the 60m hurdles for the second straight season, clocking in at a season-best 8.23 seconds in the finals. Junior Colin Paarmann recorded a personal-best time of 8.33 seconds for third place and All-Summit League honors. Stoudt placed fifth, and Larson was seventh in the event.
South Dakota won its third consecutive Summit League indoor team championship with 222 points. NDSU took second with 171 points, and South Dakota State was a distant third at 106.
NDSU redshirt freshman Jonah Warwick finished fourth in the 800m run in 1:54.75. Freshman Landon Jochim took fourth in the 400m in 49.16, and sophomore Wesley DeLong was sixth in 49.45.
Senior Lucas DeGree clocked 4:15.00 in the mile to go under the previous facility record in the event, but placed fourth in the meet.
Junior Brendan Skime placed sixth in the mile and eighth in the 5,000m after taking fifth in the 3,000m last night.
The Bison men scored a team-high 47 points in the throwing events during the meet. Berghuis' winning weight throw mark from the first day of the meet ranks 74th in the country this season.
