Gamez and Petersen Homer, but NDSU Baseball Falls at South Dakota State Saturday, 5-4

BROOKINGS, S.D. --Juan Gamez and Ben Petersen both tallied home runs, but it wasn't enough as the North Dakota State University baseball team (8-20, 3-11 Summit League) fell at South Dakota State (19-13, 8-6 Summit League) on Saturday, April 11, 5-4.

The Bison and Jackrabbits are slated to complete the three-game Summit League series on Sunday, April 12, with a single game at 1 p.m.

Gamez led NDSU at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in, while Petersen went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI.

Right-hander Reed Pfannenstein suffered the loss on the mound for the Bison after surrendering two earned runs on four hits in four innings of work.

The Bison jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Petersen hit a round-tripper to left center on a 0-0 pitch. It was Petersen's second homer of the season.

South Dakota State responded, though, plating three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead.

The Jackrabbits increased their lead to 4-1 on a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

NDSU cut the Jackrabbit lead to 4-2 after Gamez singled home Petersen in the top of the sixth, but SDSU answered in the bottom-half of the frame, plating a run on a single to build its lead to 5-2.

The Bison narrowed the South Dakota State lead to 5-4 in the top of the eighth after Gamez sent 2-2 pitch over the left field fence, scoring two runs. It was Gamez's team-high fifth home run of the season.

Matthew Johnson led the Jacks at the plate, going 1-for-2 with two RBI and a homer.

Chris Anderson (4-1) picked up the win on the mound for South Dakota State after allowing two earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks in five innings pitched.
