STANFORD, Calif. – North Dakota State sophomore Matti Mortimore unleashed a big throw in the javelin to lead the efforts of the Bison men's track & field team at a pair of meets in California on Friday.
Mortimore moved up to No. 2 in NDSU history in the javelin with a throw of 230-10 (70.37m) for fifth place at the Stanford Invitational. His mark would have been a school record before Tyler Parker's throw of 235-0 (71.62m) two weeks ago. Based on the national lists entering this weekend, Mortimore now ranks 10th in the NCAA this season.
NDSU volunteer assistant coach and 2013 USA champion Riley Dolezal won the javelin competition at Stanford with a strong season opener of 255-6 (77.87m).
Senior Lucas DeGree cut 35 seconds off his previous best in the 5,000 meters at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, finishing in 14:32.73. That performance is the fastest by a Bison in eight years and ranks DeGree fifth in NDSU history.
Senior Marty Joyce ran a personal-best time of 30:57.58 in the 10,000m at San Francisco State, ranking him just outside the NDSU all-time top 10 in the event. Joyce trimmed 10 seconds off his previous best.
Bison senior Trevor Berner took first place in the collegiate hammer throw at the Stanford Invitational with a throw of 190-5 (58.03m). Brandt Berghuis placed third with a mark of 182-0 (55.47m).
The Bison men will compete at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge hosted by Sacramento State on Saturday.
