FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State University baseball team (8-18) rolled to a 9-1 victory over the Dakota State University Trojans (9-26) in its 2015 home opener at Newman Outdoor Field on Wednesday, April 8.
John Skrbec led the Bison offensive attack in the contest, going 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and a double, while
Ben Petersen and
Brayden Resch each doubled in the game and drove in a pair of runs.
NDSU left-hander
Blake Stockert picked up the win on the mound after throwing three scoreless innings with two strikeouts and one walk to improve to 1-1 on the season.
North Dakota State scored four runs in the bottom of the third to jump out to a 4-0 advantage. Skrbec plated the opening two runs of the frame on a two RBI single to left field, before
Taylor Sanders doubled down the left field line to plate the third run of the inning.
Juan Gamez made it 4-0 NDSU after he scored Skrbec on a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
The Bison added one run in the bottom of the fourth on a
JT Core RBI single to make it 5-0.
NDSU ballooned the lead to 9-1 after posting four more runs in the sixth. Petersen plated the first pair of runs in the inning with a two RBI double down the left field line, before Skrbec drove in the third run on a RBI double to left center and scored on a fielder's choice.
North Dakota State relievers
Trevor Jaunich and
Jay Flaa combined to hold Dakota State scoreless the final three innings, sealing the victory for the Bison.
Jordan Entrikin went 2-for-3 in the batter's box to lead Dakota State offensively.
Richard Sternberg took the loss on the mound for the Trojans after allowing four earned runs on six hits in two-and one-third innings to fall to 3-4 on the year.
The Bison are scheduled to return to Summit League play on Friday, April 10, when they travel to Brookings, S.D., to begin a three-game league series against South Dakota State. Game one is slated to get underway at 3 p.m. Friday afternoon.
