Bison Men’s Track & Field Widens Gap with Big Points in Shot Put, Decathlon and Steeplechase

MACOMB, Ill. – Alex Renner, Angus Stoudt and Brett Kelly won individual titles and the North Dakota State men's track & field team racked up points in large quantities to extend its lead on the second day of the Summit League Outdoor Championships on a rainy Thursday at Hanson Field.
NDSU stretched its lead in the team race to 97.5 points over second-place South Dakota State. The Bison have 156.5 points through nine events, while the Jackrabbits are next-best with 59.
The five-time defending champions, NDSU had a remarkable 130 points after the first five events of the meet – the hammer throw, javelin, 10,000m, decathlon and shot put.
Renner captured his second event title in as many tries at the meet, winning the shot put with a school-record throw of 61-03.00 (18.67m) that ranks him 32nd in the nation and 15th in the NCAA West Region this season. He tacked another 16 inches onto his school record – the fourth meet this season in which he extended the NDSU all-time best mark.
Renner also took first place in the hammer throw on Wednesday.
Sophomore Angus Stoudt won the decathlon title with a total of 6,621 points, earning the first Summit League crown of his career. The Excelsior, Minn., native posted the top mark in the decathlon field in six of the 10 events.
Kelly, a senior from Bismarck, N.D., earned his first career Summit League individual title to cap the day, winning the 3,000m steeplechase in 9:05.94.
Along with the victories in the shot put, decathlon and steeplechase, the Bison men also earned huge scoring advantages in those three events. NDSU reeled in 32 points alone in the shot put, finishing 1-2-4-5-6-7. Freshman Payton Otterdahl placed second, Brandt Berghuis took fourth, and Conrad Schwarzkopf, Brian Blasey and Steffan Stroh rounded out the scoring for the Bison.
In the decathlon, the Bison tallied 31 points on the strength of a 1-2-3-5-6 finish with Stoudt, Brock Larson, Beau Gagnon, Grant Mjelstad and Adam Coykendall.
Junior Brendan Skime was the runner-up to Kelly in the steeplechase in 9:09.10. Redshirt freshman Brant Gilbertson finished sixth in a personal-best 9:18.38, and senior Grady Anderson took eighth.
Colin Paarmann placed sixth in the long jump, and Beau Kashmark was seventh in the high jump.
In addition to the final events contested on Thursday, the Bison men also put themselves in position to score more on the track on Friday. NDSU qualified three to the final of the 110m hurdles with Parker McKittrick, Paarmann and Stoudt. Freshman Landon Jochim advanced in the 400m and 200m dashes, while Wesley DeLong joined him in the 400m.
Freshman Matt Bedard ran a personal-best of 52.92 in the 400m hurdles to be the fastest qualifier into the final. Redshirt freshman Aron Klos also advanced in 54.23.
The Summit League Outdoor Championships will conclude on Friday.
