FARGO, N.D. –
Andy Wicklund hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift the North Dakota State University baseball team to a 5-4 win over the Omaha Mavericks on Saturday, May 16, at Newman Outdoor Field in the 2015 regular season finale.
With the win, the Bison finish the regular season at 20-29 overall, marking the sixth consecutive season NDSU has won at least 20 games, and 11-19 in Summit League play. Omaha drops to 19-30 overall and finishes league play at 12-18.
The Bison also secured their fifth straight berth in The Summit League Baseball Championship with the win and Western Illinois' loss at Oral Roberts Saturday afternoon. NDSU, the four seed, will open tournament play on Wednesday, May 20, at 2 p.m. against top-seeded Oral Roberts at Sioux Falls Stadium in Sioux Falls, S.D.
After NDSU reliever
Trevor Jaunich retired Omaha on three straight fly outs in the top of the 12th,
Paul Funk hit a one-out infield single to second base to reach first base in the bottom-half of the frame.
Juan Gamez moved Funk to third on a single to left field, before Wicklund sent a 2-2 pitch straight up the middle to drive in Funk for the win.
Mason Pierzchalski went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs batted in, and Wicklund finished the day with two hits and a RBI to pace the Bison at the plate. Funk and
Danny Regan also each tallied a RBI.
Jaunich picked up the win on the mound for NDSU after throwing three scoreless innings in relief and allowing just one hit to improve to 4-2 on the season. Bison starter
David Ernst threw nine innings and surrendered just two earned runs on eight hits while striking out three and walking two on 121 pitches.
The Bison fell behind early after the Mavs scored a run in the top of the second to gain a 1-0 lead.
The Mavs would score a run in the sixth and seventh inning to increase their lead to 3-0 before the Bison responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to knot the game, 3-3.
Taylor Sanders led-off the inning with a walk, before
John Skrbec doubled to left field, advancing Sanders to third base with Funk coming to the plate. Funk plated Sanders on a RBI ground out for NDSU's opening run of the inning, before Pierzchalski hit a RBI single up the middle to score Skrbec. Regan gave the Bison their third run of the frame and tied the contest up on a sacrifice fly to left center.
NDSU took its first lead of the game, 4-3, in the bottom of the eighth inning on Pierzchalski's two-out RBI single to left field.
Omaha answered, though, and tied the game, 4-4, in the top of the ninth on a wild pitch.
Neither team scored in the ninth inning to send the game into extra innings.
NDSU had a runner on third base in the 10th and 11th innings, but ground outs in each frame ended the opportunity for the Bison.
Adam Caniglia and Isaac Holt each collected three hits to lead the Mavs offense, while UNO reliever Ryan Cate (0-1) took the loss on the mound after giving up the game-winning run in the 12th.
