PHILADELPHIA – North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz was among the 22 players named to the preseason watch list for the STATS FCS Offensive Player of the Year award Monday, July 13.
Wentz, a 6-foot-6 senior from Bismarck, N.D., captained North Dakota State to a 15-1 record and its fourth straight Missouri Valley Football Conference and NCAA Division I FCS titles in 2014.
Wentz completed 228 of 358 passes for 3,111 yards with 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He was NDSU's second-leading rusher with 138 carries for 642 yards and six TDs while averaging 4.7 yards per carry.
Wentz set NDSU single-season records for passing attempts, completions, yards, and total offense per game. He ranked eighth in the FCS in passing efficiency (154.1) and led the Missouri Valley Football Conference in completion percentage (.637).
Named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA championship game, Wentz led the Bison on a six-play, 78-yard drive capped by his 5-yard touchdown run with 37 seconds left to beat Illinois State 29-27. He orchestrated an eight-play, 76-yard game-winning drive in the 27-24 second round win over South Dakota State.
NDSU's starter in all 16 games, Wentz went 18 of 28 passing for 204 yards to beat Iowa State 34-14 in the season-opener. He passed for a career-high 247 yards and school-record five TDs in the win at Missouri State, and rushed for a career-high 120 yards against Youngstown State.
The watch list includes 10 quarterbacks, nine running backs and three wide receivers. The Colonial Athletic Association and Missouri Valley Football Conference led the nation with three nominees each.
The STATS FCS Offensive Player of the Year Watch List can undergo revision during the 2015 season. A national panel of over 150 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries will vote on the winner following the regular season.
Also this season, STATS will honor the outstanding defensive player in the FCS, a freshman player of the year and a coach of the year with season-ending awards.
