FARGO, N.D. – Lauren Miller netted a hat-trick and six other Bison found the back of the net to help the North Dakota State University women's soccer team (1-2-0) coast to a 9-0 shutout win over the St. Cloud State University Huskies on Friday, Aug. 28, in front of 221 spectators at Dacotah Field.
"We played extremely well tonight," NDSU head coach Mark Cook said. "We had nine goals on 18 shots at one point, which means we were efficient in the offensive-half of the field. St. Cloud put up an early fight, but we found our rhythm and got nine goals."
The nine goals were the most goals scored in a single match since 2010 when the Bison defeated Centenary, 9-0.
Miller, a forward from Saint Louis Park, Minn., opened her scoring account in the 35th-minute, netting her first goal on a low shot to the center of the net off a pass from Olivia Norman. One minute later, she tallied goal number two after she controlled a pass from Amy Yang and directed it into the far right corner of the goal. The junior completed the hat-trick with a goal in the 48th-minute, scoring on another feed from Yang. Miller now has a team-high four goals on the season.
Freshman Britney Monteon gave the Bison a 1-0 lead in the 26th-minute when she corralled a pass from Olivia Norman and fired it into the left corner of the net. It was the first goal of Monteon's collegiate career. Redshirt-junior Tori Veth made it 2-0 Bison after she headed in a corner kick from Yang four minutes later. The goal was the first of her career.
After Miller's pair of goals extended NDSU's lead to 4-0, freshman Holly Enderle netted the opening goal of her collegiate career, scoring off a rebound from Hannah Butzlaff's corner kick in the 42nd-minute, making it 5-0, Bison.
Miller increased North Dakota State's advantage to 6-0 with her third goal at the start of the second-half before dishing out an assist on a goal from Yang that ballooned the NDSU lead to 7-0 in the 54th-minute.
Freshman Mallory Fenske captured the first goal of her collegiate career in the 69th-minute, making it 8-0 NDSU when she scored on pass from Meghan Johnston. Sophomore Sam Verbeke closed out the North Dakota State offensive attack, netting the ninth goal of the match in the 83rd-minute on a feed from Enderle.
Senior goalkeeper Sierra Bonham picked up the win between the pipes after playing the full 90 minutes and making four saves to improve to 1-2-0 in goal.
The Bison outshot SCSU, 20-7, and tallied a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.
NDSU is scheduled to return to action on Friday, Sept. 4, when it travels to Davis, Calif., for a non-league match against UC Davis.
