Mortimore Extends Own NDSU Javelin Record at Baldy Castillo Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. – North Dakota State junior Matti Mortimore extended his own school record in the javelin to lead the efforts of the Bison men's track & field team at Arizona State's Baldy Castillo Invitational on Saturday, March 19.
Mortimore (Ipswich, Suffolk, England) added 11 inches to his NDSU record in the javelin in his season debut, throwing 238-7 (72.72m). Early this year, Mortimore stands at No. 6 on the NCAA performance list in the event. Last season, he earned first-team All-America honors with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
Junior thrower Alex Renner won the shot put, throwing 61-00.75 (18.61m) to come within 6 cm of his own school record. Senior Brandt Berghuis posted an outdoor personal-best of 58-06.50 (17.84m) in the shot put for runner-up honors, ranking him third all-time at NDSU.
NDSU junior Brian Blasey (54-06.50 / 16.62m) and sophomore Steffan Stroh (54-00.00 / 16.46m) both entered the school's all-time Top 10 in the shot put at No. 8 and No. 9, respectively.
Senior Jerome Begin clocked 14.39 seconds for fourth place in the 110m hurdles – a new personal-best time that ranks him eighth-fastest in NDSU history. Senior Parker McKittrick ran 14.58 for sixth place.
NDSU sophomore Landon Jochim posted an impressive season opener in the 400m dash, clocking 47.66 for the second-fastest time of his career. Jochim finished fourth in the meet, and Bison junior Jonah Warwick took 10th place with a personal-best time of 48.62.
Colin Paarmann, McKittrick, Karter Gorney and Jochim ran 41.53 in the 4x100m relay – the fastest time by the Bison men since 2013.
Gorney, a freshman from Minot, N.D., opened his outdoor season by recording the fastest 100m dash time by a Bison in two seasons, finishing in 10.92 seconds. He also ran 22.18 in the 200m dash.
Bison senior Beau Kashmark cleared a career-best 6-08.00 (2.03m) in the high jump.
Sophomore Austin Schmidt (65.06m) and senior Quinn Baumann (63.43m) finished ninth and 10th, respectively, in the javelin.
Sophomore Aron Klos placed eighth in the 400m hurdles in 53.69. Stroh was the top finisher for NDSU in the discus, throwing 159-9 (48.69m) for 14th place.
The Bison will travel to Riverside, Calif., to compete in the UC Riverside Spring Track Classic on Mar. 24-26.
